Gospel artist Wingy Danejah says topping the iTunes US Reggae Songs chart is undoubtedly one of his career highlights. His song, Birthday (Remix) featuring V Rose, accomplished the feat in early October.
“It’s a real big deal, especially being a gospel artiste with the number one reggae song in the world on a secular chart, with the likes of Shaggy, Shabba (Ranks), Bob Marley, Beenie Man and Bounty Killer. These guys are legends in the business and I’m an up-and-comer compared to them,” he said.
The original version of Birthday was released in 2021. This year, it got the remix treatment from DJ Frost, a Bahamian who lives in South Florida; V Rose, a pop singer from Atlanta, complements Wingy Danejah’s dancehall toasting.
Wingy Danejah, who was raised in Portmore, has lived in Florida for over 25 years. His career started as a secular artiste in the early 1990s but he switched to gospel after converting to Christianity in the middle of that decade.
“This is like a dream come true, it just proves that I can do all things through Christ. This is the highest point I have reached in my musical career and I feel like I am flying in the clouds, words can’t explain what I feel right now,” he said.
Many of his songs carry the dancehall feel he grew up on in Portmore, which was a hot spot for that genre during the 1990s. One of his latest songs, Split Personality, is homage to that era.
While he revels in the success of Birthday (Remix), Wingy Danejah does not lose focus of his primary objective.
“This can open new doors, introduce me to new people so that I may further spread the gospel of Jesus Christ,” he said.G
